Goji Berries!
Goji berries are actually grown on an evergreen shrub and found in temperate and sub-tropical locations. When we purchase them, they are most commonly found in dried form – similar to a raisin.

The health benefits are quite lengthy and they have been used in various herbal remedies for centuries. These berries are high in antioxidants and rich in iron, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin C, protein, and more.

Tasting them right out of the bag – they have a sweet and tangy flavour. To be honest, I don’t know if I am a fan of them simply by themselves. They are often found in juices, but I have read that many people steep them in teas as well. I think that I will combine them into some tasty homemade granola bars! If they turn out, I am sure you will see them posted on here in the future.

Health Benefits of Hibiscus:
On my trip to Whole Foods, I came across this yummy sparkling hibiscus drink by Ooba. Although this drink was common on my trip down south - up here in North Bay, it would be difficult to find.
I was curious what hibiscus really tasted like, and decided to cheat and buy this sparkling water. It tasted very refreshing, with a tangy, intense, berry flavour - which surprised me, similar to a cranberry juice. I also tried two other flavours with added kiwi and pineapple extracts - still great, but I preferred the natural hibiscus taste. Next time, I will have to get my hands on some hibiscus tea to capture its true essence. If you are interested, here is some information and a few health benefits of these tropical plants.

Garlic without the bad breath?
I was exploring the grocery store – again – and found black garlic. I had never used it before, and I regret not grabbing some. So now that I am home, I am doing a bit more reading. I have found that only recently has it been brought into mainstream cuisine and grocery stores. Black garlic is created through a fermentation process for 30-60 days. Once completed, a non-pungent and fruity garlic is created. I am definitely intrigued, and want to run back to the store right now. Maybe a future recipe will be posted once I give it a try. Here is a link to the Black Garlic company that was in my grocery store, and they offer some recipes as well. But if you’re ever on the hunt for it or have used it in the past let me know how it is!

Organic vs. Nonorganic:
We all know that buying organic fruits and vegetables is not always possible. It is also a very controversial subject these days, and many still think it’s a rip-off. I still truly believe that I would rather eat fresh foods that are not soaked with pesticides, not irradiated, not genetically modified, and not full of chemicals. Although there are two reasons that primarily prevent me from purchasing organic: the price and the lack of availability. When doing some reading, I found many lists that ultimately help you make better choices at the grocery store. So here it is – ‘The Full List’ created by the Environmental Working Group. Keep in mind this does not include milk, rice and other grains.
